HOW TO GET THE MOST USE OUT OF A LEAD! LAB
LEAD! Labs are intensive, multi-day masterclasses where participants learn directly from distinguished mentors and leading industry professionals. To help you make the most of your experience, we’ve gathered five key tips from our faculty and past participants.
Come prepared
Whether you’re an instrumentalist, a conductor or a composer, knowing the repertoire and themes being discussed at the workshop is a sign of your motivation and makes you stand out. Study the scores and think through your interpretations carefully.
Ask questions
There is no such thing as a “stupid question”. Mentors are there to guide you. Don’t hesitate to ask about technique, interpretation or career development. Often, the best insights come from an honest question or a moment of curiosity.

Engage with your peers
Sharing insights and ideas with your fellow students may be just as useful as engaging with the mentors. Many alumni say the connections they made during the Labs became long-term collaborations and friendships.
Recognise your strengths and weaknesses
Reflect on what you already do well, and bring that confidence into the Lab. Knowing your weaknesses help you receive feedback constructively and focus your energy where it matters most.
Reflect, reflect, reflect
After each day, take a few minutes to jot down key takeaways. What was helpful? What caught your interest? What challenged you? These notes ensure that what you learn in LEAD! Lab continues to shape your musicianship long after you leave.
